Olana was the 19th century home, studio and designed landscape of Hudson River School artist Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), his wife Isabel and their four children. The 250 acre historic estate features an elaborately stenciled, Persian-inspired mansion filled with original sketches, studies and paintings by one of the mid-19th century's most famous artists. A diverse decorative arts collection includes objects from around the world. Today we will enjoy the complete Olana touring experience in one package! This two-hour combination tour begins with a 60-minute guided landscape walk along Ridge Road, followed by a complete tour of the rich interiors of the historic house including both the main floor and the private family spaces. This tour involves uneven terrain and several flights of stairs, and requires the ability to walk and stand for a two-hour period. A Visitor Center offers an exhibit, film, interactive touch screen computers and museum shop. Olana is one of the few intact artists' home-, studio- and estate-complexes in the United States; it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. After our tours we will travel to the White Stone Cafe in Ghent for a delicious buffet lunch. We will depart for home after lunch with an approximate arrival in the Capital District at 3pm. Non-stop each way.
