MASS MoCA is a contemporary art museum in North Adams, MA that emphasizes bold creative exploration and fosters surprising connections between people every single day. The industrial campus originated as a major textile mill Arnold Print Works in the mid-19th century, and evolved to be the Sprague Electric Company in the mid-20th century. It is now a globally renowned, contemporary art museum and fabrication center.
Enjoy the temporary exhibit, New York State of Mind. This is the newest rotation of music photography at MASS MoCA on display through August 1, 2026. The exhibition provides a snapshot of New York from 1969 to 1992, a span that gave us Bob Gruens iconic image of revelers at Woodstock, before depicting clubs such as Maxs Kansas City where we see Johnny Thunders, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Joan Baez, and Bruce Springsteen. We then go downtown to the Bowery to see Alex Chilton, the Cramps, and Patti Smith before finding Television in St. Marks Place and Tom Waits presiding over Times Square. And dont forget the outer boroughs, where Madonna had her first show on Long Island, and an uncharacteristic Joey Ramone walks the beach in Coney Island with a surfboard.
There are many options available right at the museum for lunch on your own.
