Home to spectacular coastal scenery, awe-inspiring architecture, a thriving downtown waterfront, and welcoming hospitality, Newport, RI is considered by many to be a shining gem in the coastal crown of New England. Upon arrival you will tour the Marble House. William Vanderbilt built Marble House as a 39th birthday present for his wife, Alva. It was a social and architectural landmark that set the pace for Newport's subsequent transformation from a quiet summer colony of wooden houses to the legendary resort of opulent Gilded Age mansions. Next you will have free time for lunch & shopping downtown in the Brick Market place and wharf shopping/dining district. Later we will return uptown to Bellevue Ave to finish our day with a tour of The Breakers, the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial pre-eminence in the Gilded Age. We will depart after the tour at 5pm. One stop on the way home with an approximate arrival in the Capital District at 9pm.
