As the preeminent institution devoted to the art of the United States, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of twentieth-century and contemporary American art, with a special focus on works by living artists. Explore the Whitney's collection of over 23,000 works, created by more than 3,000 American artists during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

The High Line is a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side.  Access to the High Line begins on Gansevoort St next door to the Whitney.  After you are finished at the museum, feel free to explore the green space created over the last 10 years in the "concrete jungle" of New York City.

The High Line's planting design is inspired by the self-seeded landscape that grew on the out-of-use elevated rail tracks during the 25 years after trains stopped running. The species of perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees were chosen for their hardiness, sustainability, and textural and color variation, with a focus on native species. Many of the species that originally grew on the High Line's rail bed are incorporated into the park's landscape.
