People from all corners of the world have fallen in love with the St. Lawrence River, its emerald islands and its picturesque shores. There are many reasons to spend time in the St. Lawrence River Valley and thanks to new varieties of grapes, many of those visits are to the over 25 wineries and vineyards in the North Country. Known as "cold-hardy" or Northern Climate grapes, the Frontenac, Marquette and La Crescent grapes are thriving in the Thousand Islands region, where winter temperatures can drop to into the negative digits.  And the wines created at local vineyards are drawing thousands of visitors to tasting rooms each year. We will visit four of those tasting rooms and one distillery.  Delight in accommodations at the new 1,000 Islands Harbor Hotel, a waterfront property located in Clayton, NY, and the only 4-Diamond rated resort in the area.

Sunday, September 30

With great anticipation we board the coach this morning and travel West and North to the magnificent Thousand Islands. Our first stop is at Busted Grapes. Busted Grapes is a Small Farm Winery which began in 2007 when a husband and wife team got a crazy idea to learn how to make wine. From planting the vineyard, building the tasting room, designing labels, marketing the products and, of course, making and selling the wine, this husband and wife duo have taken care of every aspect themselves. Busted Grapes currently offers 10 different varieties of wine ranging from Sweet to Dry. Enjoy a tasting and meet the owners! Next, we’ll savor lunch (included) at the Sackets Harbor Brewing Company. Your meal choices are: 1) Pulled Pork Sandwich, 2) Marinated Grilled Chicken Breast Sandwich, 3) Brew House Mixed Green Salad or 4) Black & Bleu Burger. Our next tasting will be at Yellow Barn Winery. Built in the early 1800's, the barn was once a horse farm then a dairy farm and a winery since 2006. The winery sits on 5 acres and is surrounded by 500 acres of farmland. After our tasting, we will head to our accommodations. The 1,000 Islands Harbor Hotel (315-686-1100) sits right on the banks of the beautiful St. Lawrence River, and offers an indoor heated pool; a fitness room and a jacuzzi (so don't forget your bathing suit!). Dinner is on your own this evening. There is a restaurant at the hotel, the Seaway Grille, or there are a variety of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. The rest of your night is free to relax and enjoy the hotel amenities.

Monday, October 1

A buffet breakfast is included at the resort this morning. Our first tasting today is at Otter Creek Winery in Philadelphia, NY. Located on a second generation family farm and the creek it overlooks, Otter Creek Winery, is one of Northern New York’s original farm wineries. Owned and operated by Kyle Hafemann, the youngest person to ever start a New York Farm Winery, opened in 2007 and currently produces over 7,000 gallons of 13 different varieties of wine. Today we will taste a sampling and you will get to keep your glass! The Thousand Islands Winery will host our next tasting. Thousand Islands Winery is the largest farm winery in Northern New York State and is located along the majestic St. Lawrence River on a historic forty acre farmstead established in 1836. The Winery began its operations in 2002. Lunch is included next at the Wood Boat Brewery in Clayton, NY. Your meal choices are 1) Turkey Wrap, 2) Open Faced Reuben, 3) Brick Oven Cheese Pizza or 4) Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad. Our final stop on our tour will be at Clayton Distillery. As the region’s first micro-distillery, Clayton Distillery produces premium grade distilled products from locally grown grains and fruits such as gin, vodka, moonshine and whisky. Enjoy a tasting before we will depart for home at 4pm with an approximate arrival in the Capital District at 9pm. One stop each way.
