In 1997 the tattoo tradition began in the home of the world’s biggest Naval base and the largest populations of military families in America – Norfolk, Virginia.  Not surprisingly, Virginia International Tattoo has become renowned as the most patriotic of the world’s great Tattoos.  Each year’s Tattoo is different, with new performers from across the globe, new themes of honor and patriotism and state-of-the-art technical effects which will leave you amazed.  In 2017 there will be an extraordinary 1,000 person cast from 8 nations including all-time favorites like Band of His Majesty the King’s Guard from Norway and the United States Marine Corps Band Quantico along with first time performers from France, the UK and the Far East.

Enjoy beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay as you learn about the history of Virginia's largest city and get the pulse on current day Virginia Beach. See the First Landing Cross at Cape Henry where the English colonists first came ashore in 1607 prior to settling at nearby Jamestown. Enjoy a stop at the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse, built in 1792. This lighthouse was active until the late 1800's and is currently a Virginia Historic Landmark. We'll also see the historic Cavalier Hotel as well as the Tidewater Veteran's Memorial, a unique structure which pays homage to veteran's everywhere. Tour the Old Coast Guard Station, a former life-saving station from 1903, which houses exhibits dedicated to preserving our marine heritage. There will be time on your own for lunch and shopping at Town Center, a tree-lined, outdoor pedestrian mall. Later, we will travel to one of Virginia Beach's most revered attractions, the Military Aviation Museum. This museum is the home to one of the largest private collections of World War II and Korean War era fighters, bombers, trainers and seaplanes in the world. We will return to the hotel after our tour to relax and freshen up before dinner (included) at Rockafeller's Restaurant. You will choose off of a preselected menu on arrival.

Friday, April 28:

Breakfast is included at the hotel this morning. Our guide returns to join us for a tour of the historic seaport of Norfolk. Learn of its colorful 330-year history as you ride through the lovely historic district and restored areas. Our first stop will be at Nauticus, a nautical museum, where guests will learn about the power of the sea, experience ship handling first hand and even pet a shark before a self-guided tour of the Battleship Wisconsin, the largest battleship that served WWII, the Korean War and the Persian Gulf War. Then we will board the Spirit of Norfolk for a luncheon cruise. Feast on a sumptuous lunch buffet and enjoy informative narration as you cruise through the Hampton Roads Harbor. Cruise past fascinating sights along the waterfront such as aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines at Norfolk Naval Base, the Battleship Wisconsin and Old Fort Norfolk. On the way back to the hotel we will stop at Doumar's, home of the world's first ice cream cone machine. Learn about Abe Doumar's four-iron waffle machine that he launched at the Jamestown Exposition in 1907. Everyone will also get a tasty ice cream treat! Tonight you are on your own to enjoy the boardwalk and dinner on your own.

Saturday, April 29:

Following breakfast at the hotel (included), we will travel with our guide to Norfolk and our reserved seating at the Parade of Nations which features marching bands, Tattoo performers, dazzling floats and decorated NATO officials, all representing NATO nations. After the parade, we will take a short walk to Town Point Park for NATO Fest, a cultural experience of food, drink and entertainment. The 28 NATO countries will showcase their unique cultures in a festival-style format. Lunch is on your own from the many international offerings. Next, we will visit the Norfolk Botanical Garden containing 155-acres of colorful landscapes, unusual flowers, and one of the largest collections of azaleas, camellias, roses and rhododendrons on the East Coast. You will have free time at the hotel to relax and freshen up before our fun filled night at The Virginia International Tattoo. It will begin with Taste of Tattoo, a pre-performance Dinner Experience, featuring lively entertainment acts performed on stage while guests enjoy a delicious, plentiful Southern buffet dinner. Then, it's on the toe main event - the Tattoo, the largest in the United States. In a premium seating section, guests will see pageantry and patriotism, spirit and spectacle, talent and teamwork.
