Sunday, August 27th:

With great anticipation and expectation, we board the coach this morning and travel to Newport, RI where upon arrival you will have time for lunch on your own in Brick Market Place, located across from the lovely Newport Harbor. There are a wide variety of dining options in the ar a that will appeal to all. This afternoon we'll take a ride uptown to Bellevue Avenue to The Marble House, where we will experience the Gilded Age on a 90 minute self-guided audio tour. William K. Vanderbilt asked architect Richard Morris Hunt to design his home "the very best living accommodations that money could buy." The result was The Marble House, built at a cost of $11 million and containing 500,000 cubic feet of marble. Vanderbilt presented the house to his wife, Alva, as a 39th birthday present! The grounds include a colorful Chinese Teahouse overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. We will then continue on to our accommodations for the next two nights in South County, RI at the Holiday Inn South Kingstown, RI (401-789-1051). Only 9 miles from Newport, this newly renovated property features free Wi-Fi, a full bar and outdoor pool. You will have time after check in to relax and refresh after a day of touring. Dinner will be on your own tonight; we will provide transportation into the Brick Market/Bannister's Wharf area of Newport where you can explore and enjoy a meal one of Newport's many eateries.

Monday: August 28th:

A deluxe continental breakfast is included this morning at the hotel, then we will make our way to Point Judith, RI where we will board the Block Island Fast Ferry to spend the day on Block Island! Only 15 miles from the coast of Rhode Island, Block Island offers many attractions, including 2 lighthouses, 17 miles of beaches, and great restaurants. Upon our arrival we will savor lunch (included) on the front porch of The National Hotel, located right on the waterfront. Your meal includes New England clam chowder and an entree choice of 1) Fresh Seafood Cake with Lemon Basil Aioli, 2) Baked New England Scrod crusted with wheat berry breadcrumbs and fresh tarragon, with a toasted garlic lemon oil or 3) Pan Seared Chicken Breast finished with an herb butter sauce. Apple rum cobbler is included for dessert! After lunch, delight in a narrated one hour bus tour and view scenic island beauty and charm. Then we will walk among the alpacas, llamas, yak and other animals to get to North Light Fibers, the only Light Industry on Block Island. Learn about different exotic fibers and tour a new working yarn mill and weaving center. The tour will conclude in the North Light Fibers store where participants will be able to purchase Block Island made hand knit and hand woven items. There will also be time on your own for shopping and browsing in the unique village shops before we take the 5:15pm ferry back to Point Judith. We will disembark the ferry and then head right to dinner (included) at George's of Galilee, located right by the ferry dock! Your four course meal presents some of the best food Rhode Island has to offer. Everyone will start with a Cup of RI Clam Chowder or a Field Greens Salad, followed by Grilled Oysters (cooked with garlic lemon butter and parmesan cheese), and then your choice of entrée: 1) Sesame Atlantic Salmon Roulades with ginger sauce, 2) Chicken Margarita with roasted red peppers, prosciutto, and fresh mozzarella, or 3) Lobster Ravioli with chunks of fresh lobster in a tomato cream sauce. All entrees served with potato, fresh seasonal veggies, rolls & butter. Finally last but not least delight, in a Fudge Brownie Sundae for dessert served with vanilla ice cream. All meals include coffee, tea, soda, and lemonade. After dinner we will return to the hotel and the rest of your evening is free.

Tuesday, August 29th

A deluxe continental breakfast is included this morning at the hotel. Then we're off to the magnificent Breakers mansion on Ochre Point Avenue. Cornelius Vanderbilt II, President and Chairman of the New York Central Railroad, commissioned leading American architect Richard Morris Hunt to design this summer retreat for his large family. This 70-room Italian Renaissance-style house includes a 45 foot high central Great Hall. A National Historic Landmark, it sits on a 13 acre estate overlooking the Atlantic Avenue. Following our tour we will return to downtown Newport and the Brick Market Place for lunch on your own and more free time before our departure at 2pm with approximate arrival in the Capital District will be 6pm. One stop each way.
