For as long as anyone can recall, the words “Cape Cod” have conjured up evocative images of sandy beaches, lighthouses, sea captains’ homes, picturesque fishing villages, clams, and lobsters. Not only will we experience the Cape, we will also discover the wonders of its two lovely islands, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Martha's Vineyard is probably best exemplified by its many scenic beaches. The beaches vary from protected, shallow, clear-water stretches on the northern and eastern sides of the island to expansion of rumbling surf along the south side. Every foot of the Vineyard has a rich density of history stocked vertically, so that a building now used as a shop or a theater once may have been a church as a meeting hall, and before that a bank or a residence. Nantucket is the best preserved town in New England. It reflects a stirring and glorious past, and to all who come to Nantucket, there is a welcome waiting. The outlying lands of Nantucket was originally called "The Commons". Here, the open heath is a virtual paradise, with an astonishing variety of wildflowers, thickets of scrub-oak, bayberry and pine groves, stretches of mealy plum, an infinite array of shrubs, and green mazes of swamps where wild grape and high-bush blueberry grow in profusion.

We are on our way this morning to a delightful coastal New England destination, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. En route we will visit the Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich, MA. The museum is located on one hundred acres of landscaped grounds with the Auto Museum, Old East Windmill, the Art Museum, and the American History Museum. Thanks to the foresight and commitment of its founders, the Lilly's, the museum's collections of American art, history, industry and horticulture will be preserved for future generations to enjoy. After time on your own at the museums and gardens we will continue on to our accommodations at the Heritage House Hotel (800-352-7189), located in Hyannis, the heart of Cape Cod. The hotel offers newly renovated rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, a large whirlpool and is within walking distance to the John F. Wednesday, May 17

A full breakfast is included at the hotel each morning. Then we'll board the Hi-Speed Ferry and make our way to the island of Nantucket. A local guide will join us upon our arrival and will escort us on a tour of the island. Originally a booming whaling port, Nantucket has been named a National Historic District and has architecturally changed little since the 17th century, as seaside cottages and old-fashioned lamps still line its streets. This tour offers a truly interesting riding view of America's most scenic little island. In just over one hour, become acquainted with the "Little Grey Lady". This narrated tour covers close to 65% of the island including: The Old Mill, "Sconset" Village with its rose colored cottages, Low Beach, Sankaty Head Lighthouse, cranberry bogs, and Nantucket moors. After you see all of the above and more, you will be on your own for lunch, shopping, and perhaps more exploring. We will return to the hotel later this afternoon and you will have free time to relax and refresh. Dinner is included at the Hearth & Kettle Restaurant in Hyannis tonight. Your meal choices are 1) Chicken Pot Pie ( a hearty portion of braised chicken, carrots, peas & onions with savory chicken gravy, served on a flaky puff pastry) or 2) Broiled Cape Scrod topped with sherried crumbs. Your meal also includes beverage, garden salad, creamy mashed potatoes, fresh seasonal vegetables, and New England apple crisp for dessert. Please give your entrée choice to our staff when making your reservation.

Thursday, May 18

After breakfast this morning following your meal, we'll board the Hi-Speed Ferry to Martha's Vineyard. Upon our arrival we will delight in a 3 ½ hour guided tour of the island (includes a 1 ½ hour lunch stop). You've escaped the bustle and stress of the mainland, so take a deep breath of sea air, soak in the scenery and relax as our guide describes our surroundings. The towns of Martha's Vineyard offer surprising diversity, each with its own character and personality. For those who cherish the past, Edgartown presents an architectural memorial to "whaling's golden age". Oak Bluffs, with its "gingerbread" cottages and the ocean front park gazebo is a Victorian-era summer resort community of national repute. A walk out toward the shore will take you to Ocean Park which is ringed by storybook mansions, each a visual delight of towers, turrets and porches with swooping roofs and various pastel colors. Vineyard Haven is the island's multi-faceted and picturesque center of commerce, a year-round port anchored by a wooden boat building industry. After the tour you will be on your own to explore Oak Bluffs at your own pace before we board the ferry to return to Hyannis later this afternoon. You will then have time to unwind and freshen up at the hotel. Dinner is included at the hotel this evening, and your meal choices are 1) 1 1/4 lb. Lobster or 2) New York Sirloin. A vegetarian option is available upon request. Please give your entrée choice to our staff when making your reservation. After dinner the rest of your night is free.

Friday, May 19

Following breakfast this morning we will depart Cape Cod and travel to Newport, RI. Legendary Newport is a unique combination of location, variety and scenery. This is a city of fascinating contrasts, a rare blend of New England charm and international flair, and a small city that remains largely untouched by time or development. Then we'll take a scenic drive along Ten Mile Drive (or just "The Drive" to locals). It encompasses most of the southern coastline of Aquidneck Island. This area used to be farmland, but today is one of the most popular Newport attractions. Once you're out there, it's very easy to see why. You'll see some amazing waterfront homes and spectacular views! Following the tour we're off to the unique Brick Marketplace, as well as the waterfront shopping district which includes Bannister's & Bowen's Wharves where you will be on your own for lunch and shopping. We will depart at 4pm with an approximate arrival in the Capital District at 8pm. One stop each way.
