Legendary Newport, RI is a unique combination of location, variety and scenery. Newport is considered the “Grand Dame.”  A city with a past, Newport recalls its Colonial and Victorian days with its month-long Christmas celebration, "Christmas in Newport."  The glitter of gold and the sparkle of silver will dazzle you as you tour three magnificent mansions decked out in Yuletide finery. The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House--three National Historic Landmarks and icons of the Gilded Age in America--are filled with thousands of poinsettias, fresh flowers, evergreens and wreaths. Decorated trees reflecting individual room decor anchor many of the magnificent spaces. At The Elms, a 15 foot tall poinsettia "tree" is made up of approximately 150 individual red poinsettia plants. Dining tables set with period silver and china complete the elegant setting. And windows of each mansion are lit with individual white candles, in keeping with the colonial tradition. You can be a part of the rich tapestry of American history as you come to treasure the legacy of the Newport Mansions on this memorable holiday tour!

With great anticipation and expectation, we board the coach this morning and travel to Bellevue Avenue in Newport, RI headed to our first stop, The Elms. A National Historic Landmark, The Elms is a French-style chateau, designed by architect Horace Trumbauer as a summer home for millionaire entrepreneur Edward Berwind. It contains every technological marvel of its time. After our tour we’ll go to the Visitor’s Center which is in close proximity the nearby Brick Market Place and the Bowen or Bannister’s Wharves shopping districts. You will have free time for lunch on your own. Then we will return to Bellevue Avenue for a tour of The Marble House. William K. Vanderbilt asked architect Richard Morris Hunt to design his home "the very best living accommodations that money could buy." The result was The Marble House, built at a cost of $11 million and containing 500,000 cubic feet of marble. Vanderbilt presented the house to his wife, Alva, as a 39th birthday present! The grounds include a colorful Chinese Teahouse overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. After our tour we’ll travel to our accommodations for the evening at The Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina (401-848-3304). Surrounded by historical cobblestone streets and world-famous yachts, Newport Hotel and Marina neighbors everything in the downtown area. From shopping and dining to simply strolling around and seeing the sights, you are only steps away from experiencing the city by the sea. Dinner tonight will be included on property, meal choices are as follows: 1) Chicken Marsala, 2) Grilled Salmon, or 3) Beef Tenderloin Tips. All entrees served with chef’s choice of seasonal vegetables, and mashed potatoes. Also included is House Salad, rolls with butter, and your choice of Cheesecake with Fruit Garnish or Chocolate Lava Cake for dessert. Following dinner the rest of your evening will be free.
