People from all corners of the world have fallen in love with the St. Lawrence River, its emerald islands and its picturesque shores.  The region is a land of legend.  On "Heart Island" a devoted husband set out to build a full-sized Rhineland-style castle.  Construction began in 1900 on a magnificent six-story, 120 room castle, complete with a drawbridge and Italian Gardens.  In 1904, George Boldt commanded the workers "to stop all construction".  His beloved wife Louise had died unexpectedly, and a broken-hearted Boldt could not imagine his dream castle without his wife at his side.  He never returned to the island again.  Since 1977, millions of dollars have been invested in the restoration of the Heart Island structures including the magnificent Boldt Yacht House which features a collection of antique wooden boats...some from the original Boldt fleet. Delight in top notch accommodations at the lovely waterfront Riveredge Resort, located in Alexandria Bay, NY, enjoy a cruise through the 1,000 islands, discover the mysterious Singer Castle on Dark Island, & more!

Sunday, August 5:

With great anticipation we board the coach this morning and travel West and North to Alexandria Bay, NY and the magnificent Thousand Islands. Upon arrival we’ll savor lunch (included) at the Riveredge Resort (315-482-9917), our accommodations for this weekend. The resort overlooks the beautiful St. Lawrence River, and offers an indoor pool; a fitness room and a hot tub (so don’t forget your bathing suit!). Upon arrival you will enjoy a Buffet lunch (included) served in the Windows on the Bay Restaurant. Menu includes iced
tea or lemonade, Italian pasta, fresh baked rolls, herb roasted chicken, baked tilapia, roasted red potatoes, and chef’s choice of dessert. Then we’ll continue on to Uncle Sam Boat tours for a 2 and 1/4 hour, Two Nation cruise tour of the 1,000 Islands. Enjoy an international tour that will take you on a 22 mile round-trip through American and Canadian waters - what is considered the ‘heart’ of the 1000 Islands, including Millionaire’s Row. This trip will give you the best overall view of this truly unique geographical area shared by two nations. Professional tour guides will provide a lively narrative as you cruise through the narrow channels, over historic sunken wrecks, by magnificent summer homes of the
rich and famous and provide you with local historical facts and folklore as well as information about the area’s geology, environment and native wildlife. The tour ends with a stop at Heart Island to visit Boldt Castle. We’ll then return to the hotel and you will have time to relax and freshen up after check in. Dinner is included this later this evening at The
Windows on the Bay Restaurant. The rest of your night is free to relax and enjoy the hotel amenities or to explore Alexandria Bay.

Monday, August 6:

A buffet breakfast is included at the resort this morning. Then we will board a tour boat and cruise to Dark Island, where we will enjoy a guided tour of Singer Castle. Originally called "The Towers", it was built by self-made millionaire, Frederick Gilbert Bourne, for his family, as a hunting retreat completed in 1904. Including a labyrinth of secret passageways, turret rooms, and even a dungeon, this castle designed by Ernest Flagg is truly an architectural marvel. A box lunch is also included, and your sandwich choices are 1) Turkey 2) Ham or 3) Roast Beef. The boxed lunch includes beverage, sandwich, chips, pickle, & a cookie. We will return to Alex Bay this afternoon and enjoy a tour and tasting at Thousand Islands Winery, the largest farm winery in Northern New York State. We depart for home at 3pm with an approximate arrival in the Capital District at 8pm. One stop each way.
