Newport, Rhode Island. A breathtaking city on the water, a worldwide destination for vacationers, students, athletes, and historians alike. America’s wealthiest residents of the late 19th century reveled in the area’s natural coastal beauty too, and built their summer “cottages” there to escape the hustle and bustle of New York City life. These “cottages” however, are anything but quaint. You may know them better as “the Newport Mansions.” The enormous facades and even more lavish interiors housed a unique and selective class of business moguls and heirs. No expense was spared in their decoration or in the jaw-droppingly decadent parties their residents threw.

Early Bird Discount: Book and pay in full by July 23, 2018 and save $30pp! Discount is not automatic; please mention when making your reservation.

October 23rd

This morning we will depart for Linden Place as we begin our adventure. Tour highlights include tales of DeWolf family exploits, from their privateering and slave trading to their financial ruin and triumphant return to prosperity during Victorian times. Docents introduce visitors to family members Pomeroy Colt, founder of United States Rubber, now Uniroyal, his mother Theodora DeWolf Colt, who as Madam Colt ran Bristol Society from Linden Place as if she was Queen Victoria and the great actress Ethel Barrymore who married in to this most prominent of American families. At the tour’s end, visitors are welcome to stroll the sculpture-filled gardens where they will find Greek bronzes and an 18th Century gazebo. Don’t miss the recently opened Bristol Art Museum in Linden Place’s 19th Century Barn. After our tour we will have lunch included at the DeWolf Tavern. After our delicious meal, we will head to the Herreshoff Marine Museum. Also located in Bristol, RI, it's a maritime museum dedicated to the history of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, yachting, and the America's Cup. You will have time to explore this historic museum before departing for our accommodations at the Newport Harbor Hotel (401-847-9000), ideally located right in the heart of downtown Newport. Tonight dinner will be at the hotel, and the rest your evening is free to explore the area.

October 24th

A full breakfast is included this morning at the hotel. We will then meet our guide, "Mrs. Astor", the Grand Dame of Newport in the height of it's Gilded Age. We will embark with her on narrated tour of Ten Mile Ocean Drive, with a stop for photos at Brenton State Park which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. We will then have an audio tour of the Marble House, which was built between 1888 and 1892 for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt. It was a summer house, or "cottage", as Newporters called them in remembrance of the modest houses of the early 19th century. But Marble House was much more; it was a social and architectural landmark that set the pace for Newport's subsequent transformation from a quiet summer colony of wooden houses to the legendary resort of opulent stone palaces. After our tour, we will savor in a sit down lunch at Johnny's restaurat. Between lunch & dessert,, enjoy a "cotillion"/dance, waltz with Mrs. Astor as she teaches you two different dances with live music! After lunch we will travel to the Newport Art Museum where you will have time to explore before heading back to the hotel for a free evening in Newport.

October 25th

After our breakfast, we will depart for a Trolley Tour of Newport. We invite you to travel from the Modern Age to the Gilded Age! We will have a tour of Rough Paint, a Mansion belonging to the American Tobacco Co. heiress and founder of the Newport Restoration Foundation, Doris Duke. After our tour, we will take the trolley to the Tennis Hall of Fame! The International Tennis Hall of Fame preserves and promotes the history of tennis and celebrates its champions, thereby serving as a vital partner in the growth of tennis globally. After our tour, we will have a wine tasting and tour with a boxed lunch at the Newport Vineyards. After our lunch and tour, we will say goodbye to Newport and head home with an approximate arrival in the Capital Region at 6:30PM.
