From the Rhineland and Palatinate of Germany came great migrations of settlers to Pennsylvania in the 18th century. Because they retained their customs and speech and developed beautiful and bountiful farms, the Pennsylvania Dutch country is one of the state's greatest tourist attractions. There are all degrees of conservatism among the descendants of German immigrants and they all share tremendous vigor, family devotion, love of the Bible and a belief in thrift and hard work. Your four hour tour will take you through the heart of Amish Country and you will see these simple people and get a feel for their daily lives. It also includes a snack in an Amish home. See the show “Jesus” at the Sight & Sound Millennium Theatre. Step back in time and join friends and family on this charming and scrumptious tour that celebrates the simpler pleasures in life!

Friday, Oct 19

When you board the coach this morning you are on your way to another country: Amish Country. We will then continue on to our accommodations for the next two nights at the Country Inn of Lancaster (717-393-3413). A family style dinner is included tonight at Plain and Fancy; then we're off to the Sight & Sound Millennium Theatre to see "Jesus". Jesus’ story may be familiar but his actions still surprise us. He befriends outcasts and heals the hurting. He challenges social norms and confronts hypocrisy. He sets sail with fishermen and reasons with religious scholars. The lives he touches are never the same. From the streets of Jerusalem to the raging Sea of Galilee, no place—and no person—is beyond the reach of his love. We will return to the hotel after the show.

Saturday, Oct.20

A buffet breakfast is included at the hotel this morning. A local guide will then join us for a 4 hour Amish Farmlands tour. Our guide will give us detailed "inside information" on Lancaster County's Amish; we'll learn about their history, religion, customs and lifestyle. We will visit the Kitchen Kettle Village for a lunch stop (on your own), where you'll find over 40 shops jammed full of Lancaster's simple pleasures. Sample fresh jams, stroll over to the Bake Shop, scoot over to the Jam & Relish Kitchen and try their sweet and savory selections. Next we will visit with the Lapp family inside of their home where Anna and her girls will make some snacks and drinks for you while you sit and talk and get to know the family. Once our snack visit is over, our guide will continue into the countryside and talk about the Amish customs and traditions. Pass by several one room schoolhouses which are still being used today by the Amish children. Maybe we'll be lucky enough to see Amish working in the fields or Amish horse and buggies clip-clopping down the roads. After touring through the Amish farmlands we will enjoy in dinner (included) in an Amish home. Look forward to a family style meal of two meats, three vegetables, homemade bread, and delicious homemade desserts. We will dine with Sam Lapp and his sons while Ruth and the girls serve us the family style meal. Yes, the family will be dining with us! We will return to the hotel after dinner.
